Yes, you read the title right. I lost 7 kilos in 7 weeks eating 7 pounds of bacon. On top of that, I also ate sausages, burger patties, cheesecake, pancakes and butter in my coffee.
Before I talk about how I did it, first let me introduce myself. I’m Jannah. As a teenager, I’ve always been bigger than everyone else. I was not overweight, but if you hang out with girls who weigh 37-39 kilos, weighing 45-47 kilos makes you look fat. At my biggest, I weighed 58 kilos. At 5 ft. 2 inches, I was not overweight when it comes to BMI; but I was close.
In October 2016, I decided to change the way I eat a week earlier than planned. I planned on “dieting” after a solo vacation, but Typhoon Haima struck Caramoan. I had nothing to do and felt bored. Since then, I lost 7 kilos. What did I do? I ate Low Carb High Fat.
Figure out my macros: Macros is the short-term for macronutrients. These are the macronutrients that your body needs: carbohydrates, fat and protein. Our macros depend on our activity level, gender, age, height and your weight goal. I figured my macros through a calculator like this.
Eat more bacon (and other meat products): Since I changed my way of eating to Low Carb High Fat, that means I can enjoy eating more bacon. Gone are the days I’d feel guilty about eating it. Bacon has 1.4 grams of carbohydrates per 100 grams. Take note that carbohydrate content will vary depending on the brand or if it’s cured or uncured. To be safe, get the brand of bacon that doesn’t add sugar or any other sweeteners. If you don’t like bacon, eat more protein of your choice. I enjoy eating burger patties, sausages, chicken wings and steak.
Add butter and MCT/coconut oil to my coffee: This sounds gross, but it is yummy. If you’re a coffee lover and can’t function well without it, it’s worth a try. Coffee suppresses appetite and the fats in butter and MCT/coconut oil help in keeping you full. Tip: once you’ve mixed everything, blend it together for a couple of seconds to make your coffee frothy. Another tip: If you’re trying to lose body fat, don’t do this. You want your body to burn your stored fat, not the fat that comes from the food you eat. Also, butter and MCT oil are high in calories and it’s better to get your calories from nutrient-rich food.
Eat more cheese: I love cheese, especially cream cheese, parmesan and mozzarella. Cheese is a good source of protein and fats, not to mention it’s yummy. But, some people find out that dairy stalls their weight loss. So, if you don’t lose weight following this diet, try cutting down on cheese.
Eat more green veggies: Green leafy vegetables are low in carbohydrates and filling. I hate leafy greens; but since I started this way of eating, I’ve been craving lettuce and cabbage. Tip to those who don’t like veggies like me: cook them in different ways; stir-fry, roast, boil, blanch, or raw.
Gave up sugar: This doesn’t mean I don’t get to enjoy sweet treats. I had lemon meringue pie for Christmas and Cheesecake for my birthday. But instead of using sugar, I used stevia. 100 grams of stevia has only 5 grams of carbohydrates. 100 grams of sugar has 100 grams of carbohydrates.
Cut down on rice: As a Filipino, I’m used in eating rice in every meal. I would eat at least a cup of rice in every meal. That’s 45 grams of carbohydrates. I followed the keto diet at first and my daily recommended intake for carbohydrates is 25 grams. If I eat a cup of rice in every meal, I would be way over my macro. So, I didn’t eat rice for the first couple of weeks. When I reached my weight loss goal, I started eating half a cup of rice once in a while.
Said goodbye to breads and pasta: I’m a bread baker and used to bake breads once a week. I’ve also considered making pasta noodles. I had to give up these treats as they are high in carbohydrates. 100 grams of Pasta contain 25 grams of carbohydrates. 100 grams of white bread contains 49 grams of carbohydrates.
These are all the things I did to lose 7 kilos in 7 weeks. I can’t say it was easy, because the first three days were difficult. I was feeling lethargic and grumpy. I also had bad body odor at first and found out it was a sign that my body is going through changes. I can’t also say it was difficult, because I love this way of eating and I lost 2 kilos during the first week. That motivated me to keep going. But if you are going to follow this diet and find it difficult, trust the process. Take it one meal at a time. Don’t let a cheat meal become a cheat day, a cheat week, a cheat month or a cheat year.
I eat keto, but drink and make kombucha; lift (baby) weights but practice yoga; work from home (in the province where we don’t have ATM machines and where our house is surrounded by fruit trees and chickens!) using the internet but slightly living off grid; go to church regularly but not religious. If you think about it, a lot of what I do contradicts each other. As my old manager would say, “a walking contradiction.” Still, I wouldn’t do it any other way. #ketogenic #ketodiet #ketophilippines #ketoasia #ketogenicasia #ketogenicphilippines #ketogenicdiet #primal #ketosis #lowcarb #lowcarbhighfat #lowcarbdiet #lowcarbhighfatdiet #lchf #lchfdiet #kombuchaphilippines #kombuchalove #yoga #yoginisofinstagram #girlswholift #womenwholift
